New York Times plays ‘You be the VC,’ with startup vote

Armchair venture capitalists have identified mobile payments as a key area for technology sector investment, based on the early results of a startup poll set up by the New York Times on Monday.

The NYT asked online visitors to pretend they were a Silicon Valley investor and choose among a series of high-profile startups as a probable success. The firms included some names which have already gathered considerable media attention, including Pinterest, Quora and Dropbox. The No. 1 winner (so far), however, has been Square, a startup allowing payments via mobile devices that was launched by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. At press time, Square had captured close to 1,500 votes, with Dropbox close behind at just under 1,000.

The big loser among the NYT poll? Path, a mobile social network which has attracted little more than 155 votes.
