In recent years, there has been a lot of dialogue, research undertaken and committees formed around the topic of women in tech. As was noted at the recent Women in the IT Channel Recognition luncheon, women are topping out at about 25 per cent participation in the technology sector.
Professor Jennifer Glass, University of Texas, and her co-authors found in their 2013 research that women leave STEM fields at dramatically higher rates than women in other occupations. After 12 years in their careers, 50 per cent of technical women, predominately in engineering and computer science, had switched to other fields whereas only 20 per cent of women professionals in other fields had done the same.
There is still much to talk about and progress to be made on advancing women in tech. On Tuesday, Sept. 27 a panel of Canadian women with various vantage points on the tech sector in Canada will weigh in on this important topic on the xiBoss radio channel.
