3 digital media masters to follow on Twitter

Every week we take a look back at people we’ve connected with and consider worth following on Twitter for our #FollowFriday series. This week, we’re featuring the three marketing minds that we did video interviews with at last week’s Digital Media Summit.

John McCauley is the senior director of marketing at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and plays a big part in shaping the social media strategy for some of Toronto’s famous sports teams including the Raptors, Leafs, and Toronto FC. In our interview at the Digital Media Summit, McCauley described how the team deals with tough moments in sports, such as the Raptors’ one-point, game seven loss to be ousted from the playoffs by the Brooklyn Nets. But the impact of MLSE’s “We are the North” campaign was demonstrated with fans continuing to state their loyalty even after the heartbreaker (as McCauley shares in his tweet above).

Follow McCauley not only to stay updated with all your favourite Toronto sports teams, but to get useful social media insights. (When model Kate Upton was briefly shown on CBC’s broadcast of the Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins game seven on Wednesday, McCauley correctly predicted that Upton would become a trending topic in Canada.)

Umang Shah was recently Walmart’s director for social media strategy and has now joined the Campbell Soup Co. to head up the social media strategy there. Shah takes a data-driven approach to marketing and says he wants to help Campbell understand their customers better with his skill set.

He is a popular speaker at industry events and appeared at Toronto’s Digital Media Summit to discuss the “dos and don’ts” of social media for businesses. Shah was previously at Microsoft Corp. and shares on his Twitter profile that his favourite soup is tomato, to go along with a grilled cheese sandwich.

Elias Roman is the CEO and co-founder of one of the fast-rising online music streaming services in Songza. The social aspect of Songa is that users can curate their own playlists and share them with others, and it’s an aspect that’s been latched on to by celebrities and brands to help amplify their own image, and in turn, improve Songza’s audience reach.

Roman joined a panel at Digital Media Summit in Toronto to discuss native advertising and shared his thoughts on the topic with us too. Follow his account to find some interesting Songza playlists, content curated from other sites, and be notified about job opportunities at Songza. (Presumably new hires will also get to join Songza’s inflatable instruments band too.)
