400 students compete at Microsoft’s Imagine Cup

More than 400 students from over 70 countries competed last week at the Imagine Cup competition sponsored by Microsoft Corp. in New York.

The annual contest brings together young technologists from around the globe to come up with solutions to solve some of the world’s toughest problems by using tech tools provided by Microsoft.

Among the winners in this year’s six day event was Team Hermes from Ireland which took home the prize in the software design competition. The designed a device that plugs into a can and monitors road conditions as well as dangerous driving habits.

The system makes use of embedded technology, Windows Phone 7, Bing Maps and the Windows Azure cloud computing platform. The team also gets to take home $25,000.
