AMD announces update to Opteron line of CPUs

Infrastructure

AMD releases updated Opteron line
AMD introduced its next-generation AMD Opteron processor series. The x86 server processor has planned upgradeability to native quad-core within the same thermal design power envelope.

These processors deliver x86-based 32- and 64-bit computing and reduce front-side bus bottlenecks, offering users processing core consistency and stability across one-, two-, four- and eight-way systems. With power consumption in mind, Opteron processors address this concern by providing the CPUs with high power-efficiency, while at the same time delivering significant performance gains over single-core AMD Opteron processors, while operating in the same thermal infrastructure.

The CPUs also allow for AMD Virtualization, providing additional silicon-based features to allow a hypervisor (the component in a native virtualization scenario that manages the partitioning of the processor) to easily support guest operating systems. The integrated DDR2 memory controller on these CPUs enhances virtualization and provides isolation of virtual machine memory for improved security and support of virtual users.

Pricing for the Opteron processors released are:

  • model 8218 is priced at US$2,149 in 1,000-unit quantities
  • model 2218 is priced at US$873 in 1,000-unit quantities
  • model 1218 is priced at US$749 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • model 8220 SE is priced at US$2,649 in 1,000-unit quantities.
  • model 2220 SE is priced at US$1,165 in 1,000-unit quantities
  • model 1220 SE is priced at US$899 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Dotster launches virtual private servers
Dotster Inc. announced the launch of a virtual private server (VPS) offering. VPS allows for the delivery of a private environment with its own independent operating system, Web server, mail server and software instances.

Dotster’s VPS plans provide root access and are powered by Virtuozzo technology, giving customers the ability to reboot their server independently. Virtuozzo partitions physical servers into virtual private servers, each with its own root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. Controlling the Virtuozzo platform is the Plesk 8 control panel. Through a Web-based interface, Plesk 8 allows VPS customers to set up and manage multiple Web sites, e-mail accounts, DNS entries and databases including MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Dotster is launching three Linux-based VPS plans. The plans feature disk space ranging from 10GB to 50GB, with bandwidth ranging from 500GB to 2,500GB and one, two, or eight dedicated IP addresses. All the packages host 30 domains, however customers can upgrade to 100 domains for US$3.75 per month or unlimited domains for only US$7.50 per month. Other upgrades are also available, including Dr. Web Anti-Virus software and the Plesk Powerpack, which includes an anti-spam package, Tomcat support and an application repository.

Data Management

Xaware releases update to XA-Suite
XAware Inc. announced the release of XA-Suite 4.2. The upgrades in XA-Suite 4.2 allow companies to improve business agility and decrease time spent on development and maintenance of business services.

XAware’s XA-Suite 4.2 features four significant upgrades. The first is J2EE BizDriver support in XA-Designer. This allows XA-Designer to access J2EE managed resources, such as JMS or data connection pools managed by an application server, at design time and complete wizard-driven processes using those resources, thereby eliminating the need to modify components from design time to run time environments.

The second upgrade gives the XA-Suite 4.2 the ability to support complex SQL statements. This feature makes XA-Designer compatible with widely used query generation and optimization tools, such as Toad and allows developers to easily drag and drop map results. Wizard-driven edit functionality is now fully supported for components containing complex SQL.

The third feature enables support for relative paths in XA-Designer. This feature allows integration with source control systems and allows multiple developers to more easily collaborate on projects.

The final upgraded feature provides customers of XA-Suite 4.2 the ability to generate, validate and consume Web services in industry-standard styles such as RPC encoded and literal, document/literal and document/literal wrapped.

XA-Suite Release 4.2 is a bundled service that is priced per CPU.
