Android 8.0 ‘Oreo’ focuses on speed and security

The next version of Android is here, and it’s doubled stuffed with speed and security.

Google introduced Android 8.0 ‘Oreo’ today at an event in New York with updates centered around increasing the speed and power of the operating system, as well as the base-security aspects.

To start, Google says that with Android Oreo will provide faster boot up speeds, which will be nearly double as fast on the Google Pixel. It will also limit the background activity of less-used apps in order to free up memory and save battery life.

The feature that most users will be using is called picture-in-picture, meaning Android Oreo users can text, browse the web, and read emails while watching a YouTube video or video chatting. Other updates include Android instant apps that will give users access to apps without having to download said apps, new notification dots that will provide a cleaner look to your display, and autofill is coming to mobile apps.

On the security front, Android Oreo is packed with Google Play Protect that will detect and remove harmful apps. Google says that it will scan more than 50 billion apps on 2 billion devices a day. Android Oreo will also introduce a find my device feature in order to locate, lock, or wipe your device remotely. Additionally, the security status of your Android device will not be front and center on the settings tab, and overall app controls and enhanced privacy protections have been added.

It is important to note that Google Play Protect will be made available to any Android devices running version 4.2 or later, not just the new Android 8.0.

But there is one update that is even more important that speed, power, or security. Android Oreo will come with an entirely new redesigned emoji set that will include over 60 new emojis.

Android Oreo is currently entering carrier testing for Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P devices. It is expected to roll out in phases soon afterwards alongside the Pixel C and Nexus Player this fall.
