Could airport style scanners work in a subway station? A racist website just can’t find a new host. And Bitcoin is making some people rich, but definitely not me.
From Facebook – Can a plan to bomb a subway car be stopped by a portable body scanner? That’s what Los Angeles tested in a new pilot project this week. The machines use sensors to search for weapons and explosives as passengers walk through. Designed by Evolv technology, they’re intended to avoid slowing down lines too much, scanning up to 600 people per hour. But apparently one machine at L.A.’s Union Station malfunctioned before any passengers even had the chance to go through it.
Racist Daily Stormer moves to Russian domain after losing .com address from technology
Trending on Reddit, the continuing story of infamous hate site The Daily Stormer. As we told you earlier this week, the website was ditched by web host GoDaddy after attacking Heather Heyer, who died tragically after being struck by a car during the Charlottesville protests. Google declined to host the site as well, but then it popped back up again with a Russian country code domain. That’s .RU. But at the time I’m recording this, it appears that URL is now offline. The Daily Stormer says it’s also going to make itself available on the Tor network, but I don’t know why you’d want to bother.
People are taking to Google to track Bitcoin’s latest surge. On Thursday the value of one Bitcoin rocketed beyond $5,000. Bitcoin’s market value is now more than $17 billion. The cryptocurrency is getting a lift from plans for a new software update. Dubbed “SegWit2x”, the update will make Bitcoin transactions faster by increasing the size of the block size. But if you’re like me, the only thing you notice increasing is the regret that your Bitcoin investment was stolen by a shadowy online exchange.
