Calgary hack nights put the start back in startup

Startup Calgary has unveiled some major changes to its vision and focus with one overarching goal: focusing on the startup’s start.

According to the organization, its single, driving vision going forward will be on creating startups, and all its resources will be focused on this mission.

“By focusing on the early stage, pre-startup ecosystem, we aim to get deep in the trenches and focus our efforts on building the next wave of disruptive tech companies right here in Calgary,” said Startup Calgary in a blog post.

All Startup Calgary programs, projects and events will be focused on sparking people’s startup ideas, helping people actively working on building their idea for a startup, and assisting pre-startups in getting the tools, resources, mentorship, funding and customers needed to get from the seed stage to proper startup.

The idea is Startup Calgary will focus on the “start” phase, and once they’re ready to move to the next level, other organizations seeking to build the Calgary ecosystem such as AcceleratorYYC and Innovate Calgary can step in.

With this new mission in mind. Startup Calgary is launching a new weekly event series every Tuesday that will form the core of its programming going forward: Hack Nights.

“Startup Calgary Hack Nights will be like Sunday church for Startups,” said the organization. “The weekly gathering point to connect, learn and most importantly, build your startup.”

Anyone who has an idea for a startup, is trying to get one off the ground, would like to join a startup as a student volunteer, intern or employee, or is interested in being a mentor, supporter or investor, is invited to attend the free events.

They’ll run Tuesday nights from 5pm to 10pm at AcceleratorYYCon the 2nd Floor at 1212 9th Ave SE in Calgary. The first weekly event is Mar. 26th.
