Toronto-based startup accelerator Extreme Startups launched its latest cohort of five startups yesterday at a demo day event in Toronto, following its latest 12-week program of business mentorship, investment, and product refinement.
Extreme Startups also announced its new managing director is Marcus Daniels, who has been a mentor with the accelerator since July 24, 2012. Daniels is also the chief operating officer of TrendHunter a lifestyle Web site that sees about 117,000 idea hunters posting articles about new ideas daily, and advertises monthly views of more than 40 million. Additionally, he is the founder and executive chairman of MeshSquared Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in digital product firms.

Startups in the accelerator receive $50,000 of upfront funding and an additional $150,000 upon completion of the program. Extreme Startups invites technology-oriented companies with a focus on Web or mobile software to apply for its program. But they want to see an experienced, technical team and a product idea with an audience waiting to snap it up. The demo days are designed to showcase the startups to investors and industry partners.
