HP releases server line with units featuring AMD Opteron dual-core CPUs
HP announced that its portfolio of servers and server blades will now include models powered by the latest AMD Opteron processors using dual-core technology.
The HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem servers, offering AMD Opteron processors are also quad-core ready, allowing IT managers to make a simple transition to multi-core technologies. The servers incorporate AMD Opteron 2000 and 8000 Series processors, DDR2 memory technology and small form factor disk drives.
The servers will use small form factor Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk drives, eliminating the need for customers to make multiple drive transitions while simplifying system management needs. The new drives consume half the power of larger models, while improving storage performance and reliability, according to HP.
The x86 processor-based HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem servers featuring the Next-Generation AMD Opteron processors include the HP ProLiant DL385 G2 and DL585 G2 rack-optimized servers and the HP ProLiant BL25p G2, BL45p G2, BL465c and BL685c server blades.
The dual-core HP ProLiant DL145, DL385, DL585, BL25p, BL45p, BL465c and BL685c are expected to be available later this year.
QualityLogic releases updated FaxLab
QualityLogic announced the September release of FaxLab 6, a major upgrade to its FaxLab interoperability test tool. FaxLab has been used by device manufacturers, network equipment providers and carriers for the past 12 years to simplify the process of testing fax-device compatibility. It is used to test how well a particular fax device operates by emulating normal operation and error conditions for a wide variety of different fax devices, as both caller and receiver. FaxLab allows users to replace a room full of fax devices with software, which saves time and reduces costs.
FaxLab 6 will include 24 new FaxLab device simulations covering single function, low and high-end MFPs supporting modulations up to V.34 at various resolutions and compressions. It also provides improved FaxLab V.34 to V.17 fall back, new enhancements, automation, improvements to FaxLab 5x V.34 simulations and more V.17 simulations.

Snowtide Informatics Systems releases major update to PDFTextStream
Snowtide Informatics Systems Inc. announced the release of PDFTextStream v2.0, the latest version of its PDF content extraction API. PDFTextStream v2.0 is now available on the Python and .Net platforms as well as for Java. The program also supports the extraction of Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) text. It also provides tools that simplify content extraction from unstructured PDF documents; adds the ability to recognize and interpret tabular data in PDF documents; and supports v1.9 and v2.0 of the Apache Lucene search engine.
PDFTextStream enables back-end enterprise systems to extract text and metadata contained in PDF documents. This latest version is especially suited for large enterprises and government agencies that need to automate and speed the extraction and cataloging of content held in PDF documents, yet demand high extraction accuracy.
Other additions in this release include:
- the ability to use PDFTextStream within Python and .Net environments
- functionality that enables the recognition and interpretation of tabular data, along with the API for accessing the data, for the purpose of rendering spreadsheets, XML files, or other usable formats.
- full CJK character encoding support built in to the standard PDFTextStream distribution
- added support for v1.9 and v2.0 of the Apache Lucene search engine, necessary to keep PDFTextStream’s integration module up to date with the latest Lucene releases
Other features include improved accuracy of extracts sourced from rotated text, the ability to more easily plug text extracts into existing test analysis processes and functionality that enables the merging of two or more PDF documents into a single file.
