HP Inc. aims to help retailers bring their in-store technology up to a modern standard with its new point-of-sale (POS) system, ElitePOS.
The ElitePOS is packed with Windows 10, DDR4 memory, and 7th generation Intel Core processors with vPro technology. It is built to withstand anything the retail environment can throw at it – the POS system has passed MIL-STD tests in order to survive liquid spills and provide more effective cooling with side venting.
HP notes that POS devices have often been targeted by hackers, so it is integrating similar security to what it has been implementing in its consumer hardware devices. This means HP Sure Start Gen 3 is included to prevent malware attacks via a self-healing BIOS, followed by HP BIOSphere Gen 3 firmware.
ElitePOS features various authentication technology as well. This includes an optional fingerprint reader for securing logins, Creditial Guard for user authentication and password protection, and Device Guard so that IT managers can manage approved applications on the POS system that can protect against walk-up and low-level attacks via USB ports.
The security extends to physical features as well, such as an optional bolt-to-counter configuration, VESA mounting K-Lock features, and an external fingerprint reader for login through Windows Hello.
Besides faster performance, which is expected with up-to-date Intel processors, other features include interactive signage, employee attendance, and self-service apps such as customer check-in and an option for more product offerings through a section HP is calling the ‘endless aisle’.
Optional features include a receipt printer that can be worked right into a column stand, a magnetic stripe reader, and barcode scanner and standalone printer.
The HP ElitePOS will be available this month, although no specific date was announced. It can be purchased through HP or its channel partners.
