Intel works with access point vendors
Intel Corp. introduced the Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N network connection, an upgrade to the wireless component found inside Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology and other Intel-based laptops.

Intel said it has initiated the “Connect with Centrino” program. Through this program, Intel has worked with leading access point (AP) vendors including Asus, Belkin, Buffalo, D-Link and Netgear to ensure compatibility and performance. Intel’s wireless-N product is certified to work with multiple APs and as these AP’s successfully pass Intel’s testing certification criteria, they will display a “Connect with Centrino” identifier on their product packaging.

Intel’s Next-Gen Wireless-N product reduces “dead spots” in the home; optimizes high-definition (HD) entertainment experiences; improves battery life and provides the benefit of working with existing 802.11 a/b/g access points.

Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N technology as well as the “Connect with Centrino” identifier will be delivered in conjunction with notebook computers powered by Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology from OEMs such as Acer, Asus, Gateway and Toshiba that are being distributed with Microsoft Windows Vista beginning in late January and other OEMs to follow.

SMC ships high-density clustering managed switches

SMC Networks announced shipment of its TigerSwitch family of switches: the TigerSwitch 10/100 Standalone 24- and 48-port 10/100 +4 Gigabit ports Managed Switches (SMC6128PL2 and SMC6152L2). Available now, the switches pack the port density and advanced switching features to facilitate flexible network configuration. Also, the 24-port SMC6128PL2 supports PoE for placement of network components and accessories like IP phones and cameras that require power.

Both the 48-port SMS6152L2 and the 24-port SMC6128PL2 support clustering of as many as 32 switches, and for added flexibility, the SMC6128PL2 has IEEE 802.3ad Power over Ethernet (PoE) that is operational on all 24 of its 10/100 ports. Flexibility is enhanced by four gigabit uplink ports for 10/100/1000 and two or four SFP in combination with the 10/100/1000 ports on each switch.

The SMC6128PL2 and SMC6152L2 support VLANs based on frame tags or ports; automatic GVRP LAN registration and Spanning Tree per VLAN. The security features include RADIUS, IEEE802.1x, SSH, SSL, TACACS+ and ACL.

The TigerSwitch 10/100 Standalone 24- and 48-port 10/100 +4 Gigabit ports Managed Switches (SMC6128PL2 and SMC6152L2) are available now at MSRPs of US$699.99 and US$549.99. Optional gigabit transceivers: SX, LX and ZX, are also available at MSRPs of US$199.99 to US$2,804.99.

Symantec expands application performance management portfolio
Symantec Corp. announced the expansion of its Application Performance Management (APM) solution. Symantec’s Application Service Dashboard allows IT organizations to customize Symantec i3 performance and service-level metrics via a single, portal-based dashboard. Symantec also announced enhancements to Symantec Insight Inquire, a monitoring solution designed to track availability and performance of critical Web applications.

Built on the open portal standard JSR-168, Symantec Application Service Dashboard can be extended to display customer specific-data from other sources compliant with the JSR-168 standard.

Symantec Insight Inquire delivers Web application monitoring to ensure performance and availability of business-critical applications. Through user-simulated business transactions and component diagnostics of multi-tier applications, Insight Inquire ensures that the application is available and sending the correct information. In the event of an outage or a failure to meet a Service Level Agreement (SLA), Insight Inquire automatically pinpoints the infrastructure component that caused the problem.

Availability and Pricing
Symantec Application Service Dashboard, Insight Inquire and i3 are all immediately available through Symantec’s certified resellers and direct sales force. Suggested pricing for tools within the Application Performance Management solution include:

Finjan protects against malicious Web content

Finjan Inc., announced the release of its upgraded line of Vital Security Web Appliances, featuring the NG 6100 appliance for enterprises. Finjan also announced the availability of its RUSafe mode, a tool that allows organizations to scan content in “sniffer” mode, without affecting their existing infrastructure.

In addition to the NG-6100 appliance, Finjan has upgraded the existing family of Vital Security Web Appliances, comprising the NG-8100, NG-5100 and NG-1100. All Vital Security Web Appliances are compliant with the EU RoHS Directive.

The Finjan RUSafe mode allows enterprises to mirror live traffic, as specified by the user, scan content using Finjan security engines, and generate traffic logs and reports. In RUSafe mode, the customer can deploy Finjan Vital Security Web Appliance with a configuration and without changes to its existing network topology.

Finjan’s behaviour-based security engine scans Web content in real-time, breaking down the code and understanding its intent before it runs on the end user’s machine. The Finjan appliances protect against unknown attacks before traditional anti-virus companies can release a signature update or other software vendors can patch their solutions. In addition, Finjan’s Malicious Code Research Center (MCRC) enables customers to benefit from early discovery of software vulnerabilities prior to the availability of software patches.

In addition to its behaviour-based technology, Finjan’s Web security appliances incorporate the company’s Vulnerability Anti.dote engine for virtual patching, as well as its Anti-Spyware security engine. The Finjan appliances also offer optional modules for secure socket layer (SSL) inspection, load balancing, and a choice of third-party anti-virus and URL filtering engines (Kaspersky, McAfee, Sophos and SurfControl respectively).
