Name: Judy Bishop
Title: CMO
Company: BlackSquare
How long have you been in your role?
I’ve worked at BlackSquare for two and a half years.
How do you think the marketing field change in the next five years?
In 5 years, user experience will matter more than ever. Even now, consumers are more tech savvy, and way less tolerant of bad site design. There will be a huge pressure to verticalize e-commerce. You don’t use a general e-commerce site to sell high end wine, it has to be specialized.
Companies used to speak to the media, then the media would address consumers. Now, companies are speaking directly to their audience, as well as the media. In five years, every company will publish at least some of their own content.
What is your favourite smartphone app right now, and why?
Being a senior marketer is not for the faint of heart. It’s deeply satisfying, but also very intensive.
That’s why good marketers are information junkies. We have to be on top of every area of business, especially technology.
I start my day with the news. I love news apps like The Globe and Mail, The Guardian, New York Times, and Twitter (of course). I also love Accuweather. I’m a cyclist and skier, so I always need to know the weather.
What’s your favourite wine?
Because of my time in France, fine French champagne is always #1.
My ‘desert island’ red wine would have to be a red Burgundy from the Beaune region. For whites, ones from Macon are my favourite, or maybe Riesling from the Mosel region. My favourite Canadian wine is Pinot Noir from BC’s Okanagan Valley.
