If you’re looking to build a more social company Intranet, Salesforce.com is looking to help you with Salesforce Company Communities.

Announced this week with availability scheduled for the second half of the year, the vendor said Salesforce Company Communities is the intranet reinvented for the mobile and social world. The platform allows companies to deliver a customized Intranet to their employees, giving them access to content, people and apps from any device.

“Companies are spending $2 billion each year on underwhelming Intranet websites that most employees just do not use,” said Mike Rosenbaum, executive vice-president of Salesforce platform, in a statement. “With Salesforce Company Communities, companies can create social and mobile intranets that connect employees to the critical information, people and apps they need to be successful from anywhere.”

Employees will be able to use a Salesforce-backed company Intranet to publish, review, update and approve content for all employees, or just specific people or based on their role, find and engage experts in the company based on their profile and engage with them through Salesforce Chatter, share and collaborate on files, and access apps, whether it be Salesforce apps or approved third party apps, in a secure and approved environment. For example, vacation requests could be filed and handled through the Intranet.

Pricing will be announced closer to launch. The offering is already being deployed by companies such as Virgin America and Burberry.
