Sprouter launches

Sprouter Inc., the Toronto-based question and answer site for entrepreneurs, is launching a new publication targeted at emerging technology worldwide.

The launch of the new online publication follows Sprouter’s acquisition by Postmedia Network Inc. last October. The Postmedia purchase came after Sprouter announced closing its doors due to running short on cash.

BetaKit will report tech startup company launches, funding news, and acquisitions in addition to emerging trends in early-stage technology, explains Sprouter CEO Sarah Prevette in a press release. Prevette will also be running BetaKit.

“BetaKit is a response to the gap in technology reporting today,” she says. “There’s too much tabloid sensationalism in current online publications. Business leaders need a credible source for quickly identifying rising companies poised to affect their industry.”

In a manifesto on the BetaKit.com Web site, Prevette invites readers to “join us for the revolution.” It promises to not include “pithy personal rants, inflated egos, traffic-baiting ploys and ridiculous slideshows.”

For Postmedia, the publication is part of a strategy to delve further into the world of digital media, says COO Wayne Parrish in the release.

Sprouter’s Community Manager Erin Bury will be the managing editor for the new site.

The site appeared to have some technical problems in the morning launch, with the server not responding at times.
