Alberta says ‘si’ to startups
Alberta is heading south – way south – to help its startups. Theprovincial government has inked a deal with the Mexican state ofJalisco to jointly select and finance R&D projects involvingtech startups from both regions. TRLabs will head up the tech side ofthe initiative, which has already given the okay to three projects. Theprogram sprang out of a 2009 memorandum of understanding betweenAlberta and Jalisco to foster R&D for five years in the areasof e-health, radio frequency identification (RFID), nanotechnology, andmultimedia.

Hey guys, tired of being ignored while your female significant otherwiles away the hours on Pinterest? Now there’s a similar site just foryou. Vancouver startup Dudepins has launched a site that’s basically aguy-friendly version of Pinterest. The site, now in beta mode, is freeof any raunchy content or material that the average woman might findoffensive, so far.

Sara Kirke charted new territory, literally, for female entrepreneursway, way back in 1638 when she arrived in Newfoundland with herhusband. Although he returned to England, Kirke stayed in Canada andbecame one of the most successful merchants in eastern North America.Now the 2012 Sara Kirke Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation hasbeen given to Valerie Fox, executive director of Ryerson University’sDigital Media Zone accelerator for startups. The award, bestowed by thegroup Canadian Women in Technology, is a fitting one for Foxe, who alsoholds multiple patents.
