Startup news round-up: May 31, 2012

Startup Canada’s National Tour touched down in Edmonton today. The grassroots, entrepreneur-led movement will be in town until June 1 to strategize with the local startup community how to support a vibrant and sustainable entrepreneurial culture within the province.

Startup Canada is halfway through a six-month national tour to develop community-led solutions to the key challenges facing entrepreneurs. Its local tour stop falls on the heels of AccelerateAB, Alberta’s largest startup technology event, which wraps up in Edmonton today.

Hot Sh!t List

StartupNorth began listing the most notable startup personalities in its Hot Sh!t List last year.

The list is not about the people who raised the most money or those who have the biggest social graphs. “It’s about who we expect to talk about over the next 12 months. Be it the ideas, the companies, the impact, etc.,” according to StartupNorth.

OnMobile Top 100<

Waterloo, Ont.-based Kik Interactive, Inc. was named one of the leading mobile companies in the AlwaysOn OnMobile Top 100 list. In April 2010, Kik released the universal, free texting app for BlackBerry and iPhone, empowering users to message any of their friends in real time without paying unruly SMS fees.

The OnMobile 100 list identifies the top 100 private companies bring their “disruptive skills into the mobile space, turning smartphone and tablet users into sophisticated, savvy consumer and business users as well as providing huge value-creation opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs.”

TechVibes also reports that Toronto’s Admeris Payment Systems made OnMobile’s “watch” list 20 mobile companies to look out for. Admeris Payment Systems is a full-service provider of credit, debit, loyalty and gift card payment processing solutions.
