A new telecommunications service is setting up shop in Canada – one that will provide not just broadband, local, and long-distance telephone connections, but also phone branch exchange (PBX), unified communications, and IT infrastructure services to small businesses.

Based in the U.S., Edge Communications is calling its foray into Canada the first step on the road to becoming a global communications carrier. It says it will offer small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) a fully managed network, including IT infrastructure and on-site communications services fit for an enterprise-sized organization. Edge also provides malware protection, servers, and storage that can be both on or off-premises.

The company has set up its Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, Ont., also branding itself as a “white glove” service for the SMB market.

“Small businesses in Canada are challenged by managing multiple service providers, multiple technologies and multiple bills, all without available technical resources,” said Tom Huber, president of Edge Telecommunications Canada, in a statement.

“We give them a single, secure and high-availability service that saves time, cuts their IT costs by a third and simplifies their lives.”

Edge Communications will also be adding to its sales and distribution team by partnering with the channel, especially with partners who aren’t currently providing voice over Internet Protocol, PBX, or carrier connectivity services.

“For partners that are traditional resellers of IT hardware and software, we provide a way to cost effectively expand,” said Rob Low, Edge’s Canadian general manager, in a statement.

“We provide traditional IT & telecommunications resellers that already focus on telephony solutions and carrier services with a way to cost effectively expand into the SMB market, and to include services that deliver the complete IT infrastructure needs of a small business. In either case, they don’t need to purchase or resell hardware or tie up cash. It’s all part of the service.”

Edge Communications provides its services on a monthly subscription basis, though specific pricing depends on customers’ needs.
