Observers had expected the company to launch the Q2, a followup to last year’s Q1 based on Microsoft’s Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) concept. Instead, Samsung refers to the devices as the Q1 Ultra UMPC, which means it’s actually the Q1 Ultra-Ultra Mobile PC.
Featuring Intel’s Core 2 Duo processor running at 800 MHz, the Q1 Ultra will be powered by the Intel 965 Express Mobile chipset and boast GMA3000 graphics to offer DirectX 9.0c compatibility. The weight is slightly reduced to 1.5lbs from the 1.7lbs of the Q1. The height of the Q1 Ultra has also been reduced by half sn inch.
Unlike the original Q1, the Ultra boasts a full QWERTY keyboard, which is split in half so that users have access to the keys with their thumbs on either side of the device.
The Q1 Ultra’s screen has an 1,024 x 600 resolution, HSDPA, a 60GB disk and features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. It runs Vista Home Premium as well as Microsoft’s Origami Pack.
Pricing for the Samsung Q1 Ultra had not been announced at press time, but reports from CeBIT 2007 indicated the units would sell in the same US$1,500 range as its predecessor.
