Storage

ActionFront releases SignalTrace
ActionFront Data Recovery Labs announced the release of SignalTrace, a solution to recover data from media too damaged to recover data using traditional recovery methods.

SignalTrace is unique in that the process includes replacing the exacting, optimized signal processing and positioning functions of ‘hyper-tuned’ disk drives with custom hardware, software and algorithms to locate particular sectors of data, meaning that SignalTrace recovers each user bit individually, independent of the drive’s specific hardware.

ActionFront first announced the development of this data recovery procedure and methodology in 2004. SignalTrace is now in full production.

IBM introduces high bandwidth storage system for SMBs
IBM announced the release of IBM System Storage DS4700 Express, a high bandwidth storage system featuring front- to back-end 4 Gbps standard components. Aimed at SMBs, the DS4700 is a midrange storage system available to users who require fast access to data.

The product provides users with increased connectivity, including 16 disk drive bays inside the controller and up to eight host ports, reducing the need for a switch to be incorporated into the network. To handle more than 112 disk drives, customers have the option of attaching either the EXP710 or the EXP810 expansion unit to the back-end. Available in two versions, the Model 70 and Model 72 feature different amounts of cache and number of host ports. Also, a new 4GB disk drive option (15 RPM) is available on the DS4700.

The products will be available starting June 2006. SMBs are now required to manage data at a level once reserved for larger organizations. These include Web companies featuring streaming video to medical companies faced with image and record archiving. The DS4700 is designed to help these companies lower their costs by accomplishing more work with less storage infrastructure through faster data access, faster backups, as well as faster restoring, copying and mirroring of data.
