Video Rewind: Wind Mobile opens its doors

Happy first birthday to Wind Mobile. It was one year ago this week that the firm became Canada’s fourth national wireless carrier, shaking up the mobile scene with unlimited plans, no contracts, and killing system access fees.

Since Wind Mobile sold an HTC Maple to its first customer in Toronto, a lot has changed. A year later and Wind finds it is fighting other new entrants in addition to the “big three” carriers in Bell, Telus and Rogers. Mobilicity just recently rolled out in major Canadian cities from Vancouver to Montreal, and Public Mobile is competing along the 401 Highway strip in Ontario and into Quebec. Despite competition, Wind recently announced it had more than 100,000 customers, so it will likely still be around for its second birthday in another year.

In this video from Dec. 18, 2009, Wind launches its network and makes its first sale.
