According to Jevon MacDonald, launching a startup in Atlantic Canada is a little different.
According to the co-founder of Startupnorth.ca, building a startup in Atlantic Canada is definitely different than in more traditional startup meccas such as San Francisco or Austin, or even in Toronto.

Luckily though, MacDonald has compiled a list of five key things you need to know if you’re going to make your East Coast startup a success:
- Get your butt on a plane
- Government support doesn’t matter to the customer or your competitors
- You don’t need to compromise
- The talent pool is world class so you should hire first class
- You are expected to take on the world

And while we may think of Toronto, Waterloo, Vancouver and Montreal when it comes to Canadian startups, Atlantic Canada has had a healthy share of startup success. For example, Halifax-based TitanFile won 1.1 million in seed financing last year for its secure document collaboration Web service, and serial Maritime entrepreneur Gerry Pond is giving back to the region by chairing MentorCamp, a series of events designed to help startup companies held in Atlantic Canada.
