Apple refreshes iMac lineup with 4K and 5K Retina displays

Apple has updated its iMac product family with two new models: a 21.5″ iMac with a new Retina 4K display, and a 27″ iMac with a new Retina 5K display. According to the vendor, the new Retina displays will make photos and videos more immersive, thanks to a wider colour gamut and improved image quality. The new models also boast more powerful processors and graphics, two Thunderbolt 2 ports and new storage options including a more affordable high-performance Fusion Drive.

Redefining the desktop experience

“From the first iMac to today, the spirit of iMac has never wavered — deliver the ultimate desktop experience with the latest technologies, gorgeous displays and cutting-edge designs,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, in a statement. “These are the most stunning iMacs we’ve ever made. With our gorgeous new Retina displays, more powerful processors and graphics and all-new Magic accessories, the new iMac continues to redefine the ultimate desktop experience.”

The 21.5″ iMac with its Retina 4K display features 4096 x 2304 resolution and 9.4 million pixels, which is 4.5 times more than the standard 21.5″ iMac display. The new desktop also boasts a fifth-generation Intel Core processor and enhanced Intel Iris Pro Graphics. Both new models feature two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which can deliver up to 20Gbps data transfer speeds to external drives and peripherals. Three models are available today; priced at $1,399, $1,649, and $1,899 for the Retina 4K display model.

 

Teraflops of computing power

Apple’s new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display is powered by sixth-generation Intel Core processors and the latest AMD high-performance graphics for up to 3.7 teraflops of compute power. All the new iMacs boast three stream 802.11ac Wi-Fi that supports up to 1.3Gbps wireless networking. It’s available now in three models, starting at $2,299, $2,599 and $2,999.

Apple also introduced severalk news wireless accessories: the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2. They’ve been redesigned to feel more comfortable, and also eliminate the need for disposable batteries by using new rechargeable batteries. The Magic Trackpad 2 also uses Apple’s new Force Touch interface. The Magic Keyboard features a full-size keyboard with a new design that is 13 per cent smaller than its predecessor.
