Dell is targeting a more premium market with its newest Chromebook offering, the Dell 13. It’s a 13.3″ Full HD IPS display commercial Chromebook designed for mobile use by business people. It comes with Chrome for Work, Google’s suite of products designed to meet the needs of business users for a mobile workforce. It comes with a choice of Intel Celeron, Core i3 or Core i5 processors and up to 8GB RAM, and a 720p HD video webcam and dual array microphones designed to integrate with Google Hangouts for video conferencing. Up to 12 hours use on a battery charge is promised.
“Our latest Chromebook offering is designed for the mobile professional, and provides customers with an unrivalled Chrome experience which mixes the cost and simplicity benefits of Google’s chrome portfolio with Dell’s commitment to design,” said Kirk Schell, vice-president and general manager, commercial client solutions with Dell, in a statement. “Not only does the solution offer customers a superior mobile working experience, but with the availability of Dell’s leading security, management and ProSupport Plus service, it is also easy to integrate into wider device ecosystems.”
The Chromebook 13 is designed to withstand the wear and tear of day-to-day business use, using premium chassis materials such as a carbon fiber weave cover, magnesium alloy palm rest and aluminum base. The display is designed for durability and scratch resistance by using Corning Gorilla Glass NBT. Both rouchscreen and anti-glare non-touch display options are available. and the backlit keyboard and premium touchpad is also designed for frequent use.
Dell’s Chromebook 13 is compatible with the vendor’s manageability, security and desktop virtualization solutions.This includes Dell Kace for inventory management and service desk support. The Dell SonicWall Mobile Connect (VPN) app and a Dell Secure Mobile Access appliance or next-generation firewall can provide secure access to the corporate network, and Dell Wyse vWorkspace desktop virtualization software can allow Windows apps to be accessed on the Chromebook. All these would be extra services. The Chromebook 13 itself will be available Sept. 17 starting at $499.
