The smartphone just keeps getting bigger. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. continued the trend on Thursday with the launch of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 — both featuring a 5.7″ display. Samsung added it helped launch the big smartphone trend in 2011 with the launch of the original Galaxy Note. Samsung boasts the devices feature the best screen technology, the most advanced camera, the latest fast wireless and wired charging, and a powerful new processor.

Bigger phones, better experience

“At Samsung, we believed in the promise that large screen smartphones could actively address some major consumers pain points by providing users with a better viewing experience and more productivity on-the-go,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of Samsung’s IT & mobile division, in a statement. “With the launch of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5, we’re reemphasizing our ongoing commitment to bold, fearless innovation that meets the needs of our consumers.” (Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ pictured)

The specs on both devices

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ features a curved 5.7″ Quad HD Super AMOLED 2560 x 1540 pixel display that promises a more immersive smartphone experience.  Its powered by an Octa core 2.1GHz Quad + 1.5GHz Quad processor with 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal memory. It weighs in at 153g, and measures 154.4 x 75.8 x 6.9mm. The Galaxy Note5 (pictured) has largely the same specs, but lacks the curved display and  weighs 171g, and measures 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6mm. Both run Android Lollipop 5.1.

Galaxy S6 edge+ designed for multimedia

Samsung is positioning the Galaxy S6 edge+ as the best smartphone for multimedia consumption, pointing to the immersive curved display. It also features a new “Apps edge” for easy access to selected apps and an enhanced “People edge” for communicating quickly with preferred contacts. Both can be accessed by a simple swipe of the edge display.

The new Galaxy Note5

Samsung says the Galaxy Note5 was inspired by the design legacy of the Galaxy S6, and features a narrower bezel and curved back to allow it to be held more comfortably in one hand. It comes with a redesigned S Pen designed to feel more solid and balanced in the hand, with new tools and improved writing capabilities. A new clicking mechanism pops it out from the device with one click.

Other cool new features

Both devices use Samsung’s fast wired and embedded wireless charging technology compatible with most available wireless pads. A full wired charge takes 90 minutes, and a wireless charge 120 minutes. Both also boast improved video and camera technology with rear 16MP and front 5MP cameras with 4K video filming and live broadcast capability to stream Full HD video to select contacts or the public through YouTube Live.
