All Hands on Tech: Sony Xperia ZL smartphone

Spring has sprung, and it’s positively raining smartphones. Last week Samsung launched the Galaxy S4, and this week it’s Sony’s turn with the Xperia ZL.

Much like the Galaxy S4, the Xperia ZL is a 5” smartphone running Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). Weighing in at 151 grams and measuring 9.8 mm thin, it boastsHD 1080 by 1920p scratch resistant display. It’s powered by a 1.5 Mhz Qualcomm quad core Snapdragon processor, and has a 13MP camera on the back and 2MP on the front.

The Xperia uses Near Field Communications to enable some cool features. For example, tapping the phone to a special minispeaker establishes an instant Bluetooth connection, so you can take your music from your phone to the speaker. The speaker has a microphone so it can also be used for conference calls.

Sony has invested a lot of effort into the Xperia’s camera, packing in a ton of new features, including tools that recognize high or low light, action and other conditions and adjust the settings to optimize your results.

And remember the Walkman? It’s now Sony’s music playing app.

The Xperia ZL will be available in Canada in April from Bell, Mobilicity, MTS, Rogers, Videotron and WIND Mobile.

Pricing will be available from the carriers closer to launch.
